Kerry, the owner of Carbon Environmental Boutique opened their doors in 2009 right here in Edmonton, Alberta! They are a toxin-free, eco-conscious boutique & refillery that carries a collection of ethically sourced and crafted health & beauty products; as well as “sustainable lifestyle options and purposeful home improvement items to ensure peace of mind and healthy living for all.”
The storefront even took it a step further with their sustainable business practices, “we used all our own toxin-free paints so there’s no off-gassing, we also didn’t get an epoxy on the floors because they are toxic, everything is metal and wood, and we don’t have any acrylic fixtures anymore; so, from a sustainability standpoint we thought about all that and really are walking the walk.”
Carbon Boutique is also educating customers about their products and helping them with the learning curve that naturally comes when a habit shift is needed to maximize the benefits of their products. Many people think ethically sourced and sustainable products are expensive but more times than not it’s because they are not using the products correctly. This is why they take it upon themselves to help educate new customers about the products they are buying, so it’s not as expensive as it might seem. For example, while I was purchasing my products (i.e., bamboo toothbrushes) they informed me about how bamboo is processed and what to look out for. While bamboo is technically sustainable, most bamboo is chemically processed to get it out the door faster however, bamboo that is 100% certified organic, much like the bamboo products at Carbon Boutique, is water processed which takes longer but it’s truly toxin-free, biodegradable, and can become one with earth – making it fully sustainable and eco-conscious!
This is the future, the mindset of demanding better and realizing we are getting duped by all these shout cuts.
Since 2009, they have moved to three different locations, growing larger each time! And the drive to keep going? “I’m chemically sensitive so I have to live my life like this and I’m learning and I’m meeting people all the time who are also chemically sensitive.” Carbon Boutique believes that sustainability starts right at the beginning of a product’s life cycle, from how ingredients & materials are sourced to how they are processed and packaged. They spend a lot of time researching products to ensure the brands they carry are keeping the toxins out and the fair trade and cruelty-free goodness in.
